EUROUZ and AmCham Discuss Investor Engagement with Sir Suma Chakrabarti, Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan
EUROUZ met with Sir Suma Chakrabarti, Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan, and his team at the Foreign Investors Council office. The FIC Secretariat facilitated focused on enhancing investor engagement and confidence in Uzbekistan. The meeting took place jointly with colleagues from AmCham Uzbekistan. EUROUZ thanks Sir Suma Chakrabarti and his team for their continued collaboration and looks forward to involving our members in these initiatives through our committees this year.
EUROUZ Human Resouces & Capacity Building Committee holds a strategic session & opens elections for a new Committee Chair
The first EUROUZ Committee Meeting of 2025 - Human Resources & Capacity Building (HR-C) members' strategic session - was successfully held on the 16th of January. Senior representatives from 18 EUROUZ member companies attended and benefited from insightful presentations from PwC Uzbekistan, who discussed updates on labour legislation changes and salary trends, and the Uzbekistan Employers Association, who shared labour market trends for 2024-2025. Members discussed & outlined their priorities and interests in the engagement within the Committee work and formulated the core of the input that will be used to develop the Committee’s agenda for 2025. An online platform for intra-community management training & capacity-building activities will be developed in Q1 2025 by the Secretariat. Members should check for an email inviting them to submit their vote for the new committee chairperson today.

1.1 EUROPE
Germany Launches Online Visa Applications for Long-Term Visas
Germany's Federal Foreign Office has introduced a digital platform for long-term national visa applications, effective January 1, 2025. Applicants from countries including Uzbekistan can now apply online for 28 visa categories, such as work, study, or family reunification. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock described this move as an "administrative revolution," aiming to modernize immigration processes and attract skilled professionals.
German Firm Recruits Uzbek Truck Drivers
Germany's Papenburg logistics company is addressing its truck driver shortage by recruiting and training workers from Uzbekistan. Trainees receive €800 monthly during their internship, with training aligned to European standards. Since 2020, over 60 Uzbek drivers have been trained. Angela Papenburg, head of HR, emphasized the mutual benefits, noting Uzbekistan's young population and local unemployment challenges.
1.2 CENTRAL ASIA, CAUCASUS & CIS
Kazakhstan to Launch New Railway to Uzbekistan by 2027
Kazakhstan is building the Darbaza–Maktaaral railway line, expected to be operational by 2027. The $545.8 million project will add nine stations and a new border crossing, easing travel between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Over 100 km of the 203 km route has been completed.
Uzbekistan Raises Entry Fees for Turkmenistan’s Trucks
Uzbekistan revised entry fees for foreign trucks starting January 2025, increasing charges for Turkmenistan’s vehicles. Trucks over 20 tons now pay $250, up from $150. Rates for Azerbaijan and EU vehicles vary, while fees for other countries remain unchanged.
Central Asian Leaders Address Border Issues at Trilateral Meeting
On January 8, 2025, the Prime Ministers of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan met to finalize border agreements. Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan exchanged ratification instruments, while discussions continued on unresolved sections of the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.

Russia to Boost Central Asia Gas Supplies by 15 Billion Cubic Meters Annually
Russia plans to increase natural gas exports to Central Asian nations by 10–15 billion cubic meters per year in the coming years. This expansion focuses on enhancing the capacity of the Central Asia–Center gas pipeline in reverse mode. Additionally, Russia aims to boost pipeline gas supplies to China, potentially exceeding 38 billion cubic meters annually by 2025, with further increases anticipated by 2027.
